TLDR

Bardonecchia has its own train station with direct regional service from Torino Porta Nuova in 75 minutes. The closest airports are Torino-Caselle (TRN, 90 minutes by combined train-metro) and Milan-Malpensa (MXP, about three hours). By car the Frejus tunnel puts you in France in 10 minutes. Winter tires mandatory November 15 through March 31.

Insider Tip

Book the direct Torino-Bardonecchia regional train online through Trenitalia rather than at the station. A second-class ticket runs EUR 7 to EUR 9 and the ride takes about 75 minutes from Porta Nuova.

Getting to Bardonecchia: The Big Picture

Bardonecchia is one of the most accessible alpine ski towns in Europe. It has its own railway station on the Torino-Modane international line, direct regional trains from Turin, a short drive from two airports, and the Frejus road tunnel to France literally ten minutes out of town. Hotel Rosa Serenella gives arrival directions when you confirm a booking; this guide covers the same ground for planners.

By Train

The fastest and cheapest option from anywhere in Italy is the regional train from Torino Porta Nuova or Torino Porta Susa. Trains run roughly hourly, journey time is 75 to 85 minutes, and a second-class ticket costs EUR 7 to EUR 9. Buy tickets in advance through the Trenitalia website or app. Bardonecchia station is a walkable ten minutes from the Borgo Vecchio hotels including Rosa Serenella.

From further afield you can reach Turin via Frecciarossa or Italo high-speed from Milan (1 hour), Rome (4.5 hours), Florence (3 hours), and Naples (5.5 hours). Allow 20 minutes minimum to transfer between the high-speed arrival platform and the regional platform at Porta Nuova.

By Air via Torino-Caselle (TRN)

Torino-Caselle is the closest airport, roughly 100 kilometers from Bardonecchia. From the airport, the SADEM bus or the new Torino Aeroporto GTT train runs to Porta Nuova, where you change to the Bardonecchia regional train. Total transit time airport-to-hotel runs 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on connections. Private transfer is EUR 160 to EUR 220 one way.

Airlines serving Torino-Caselle include Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz, Lufthansa, ITA, and seasonal charters. Winter connections from Northern Europe expand significantly in December and January.

By Air via Milan-Malpensa (MXP)

Milan-Malpensa has more long-haul flights than Torino but adds 90 to 120 minutes of ground transit. From MXP take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale (roughly 50 minutes), change to a Torino-bound high-speed to Porta Nuova (1 hour), then change to the regional train (75 minutes). Total transit 3.5 to 4.5 hours airport-to-hotel.

Private transfer from MXP to Bardonecchia runs EUR 260 to EUR 380 one way. In most cases the combined train route is better value and almost as fast.

By Air via Other Airports

Lyon-Saint Exupery (LYS) is an option for travelers already in France; drive via the Frejus tunnel, 3 hours. Milan-Linate and Milan-Bergamo are feasible but less convenient than Malpensa. Geneva (GVA) can work for Swiss travelers but adds border complexity.

By Car

From Turin: A32 autostrada west to the Bardonecchia exit, 85 kilometers, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Expect EUR 9 to EUR 11 in tolls each way. From Milan: A4 to Turin, then A32, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes and EUR 25 to EUR 30 in tolls each way.

From France: N94 from Briancon through the Frejus road tunnel, 45 minutes. The tunnel is operated by SITAF and the one-way passenger-car toll is around EUR 47 in 2025. Bring winter tires or chains between November 15 and March 31 (enforced on both Italian and French sides).

Getting Around Bardonecchia

You do not need a car once youre in town. The free municipal ski-bus covers Borgo Vecchio, Campo Smith, Les Arnauds, and Melezet every 15 to 20 minutes from 08:00 to 17:30 in winter. A scaled-back summer bus runs July-August. Taxis are available but limited; most guests walk or take the ski-bus for all in-town movement.

Luggage and Ski-Gear Logistics

Bardonecchia station has no formal left-luggage counter. Most hotels, Rosa Serenella included, hold luggage before check-in or after check-out at no charge. Ski-gear rental shops on Via Medail offer ski storage lockers for EUR 4 to EUR 6 per day, useful if you want to walk back to the hotel in street shoes.

Arrival Timing Tips

Aim to arrive before 17:00 for first-day check-in. The winter sun sets by 17:15 in December and the walk from the station to Borgo Vecchio is pleasant in daylight and dull in the dark. If your flight lands late, consider a night in Turin and an early-morning regional train on arrival day two.
